The new Metro configuration for Madrid Nuevo Norte will maintain the connection to Pinar de Chamartín while creating a dual terminus at North Fuencarral. The project could benefit around 175,000 residents.
The will extend Metro Line 1 to with three new stations and a dual-terminus system that will connect the new urban development with the rest of the metropolitan network.
The Regional Minister for Housing, Transport and Infrastructure, announced the chosen solution, which aims to connect this area to the rest of the network, where the construction of thousands of homes and new business activity spaces is planned.
The selected proposal reflects the contributions made by local residents during the public consultation period for the study on the extension of Line 1, in which five alternatives were analyzed for extending the Metro network to Madrid Nuevo Norte. The chosen option maintains the route from Pinar de Chamartín, while adding a second terminus at Fuencarral Norte. Both services will connect with Valdecarros.
In addition, the Regional Government will study a new proposal to ensure that Line 4 remains unchanged and continues to have its terminus at Pinar de Chamartín.
How the Line 1 Extension Will Operate
The main new feature is that Line 1 will have two departure points: trains will continue to start from Pinar de Chamartín as they do now, while a new branch will also originate from North Fuencarral. Both services will connect to Valdecarros.
This configuration will make it possible to integrate Madrid Nuevo Norte into Line 1 without replacing the existing route from Pinar de Chamartín. The Community of Madrid describes it as the first dual-terminus arrangement in the history of the Metro network.
The Three New Metro Stations
The extension includes three stations, with the names specified in the project:
- Centro de Negocios, linked to the economic activity hub planned as part of Madrid Nuevo Norte.
- Fuencarral Sur located in the southern area of the Fuencarral development.
- Fuencarral Norte, which will serve as the new terminus of the line.
Their location and relationship with the future residential and business areas will be key to understanding how public transport will be integrated into the urban development.
What Is the Relationship Between the Metro and Madrid Nuevo Norte?
Madrid Nuevo Norte plans to deliver around 10,500 homes, at least 2,100 of which would be affordable or protected housing. The recently approved Law 2/2026 of 11 June (de medidas urgentes para el incremento de la Oferta de Vivienda con Protección Pública) could make it possible to raise the proportion of protected housing to as much as 30%. However, this potential increase does not automatically translate into a final number of homes to be built.
The Metro extension forms part of the infrastructure planning needed to support the travel demand generated by the transformation of this area of Madrid. The new connection is intended to serve both future residents and the economic activity expected within the development.
For this reason, the transport project and the urban development are closely linked: the location of the stations, the pace of housing delivery, and the establishment of new business and employment areas will all influence how the Metro network is used in the future.
When Will the Metro Reach Madrid Nuevo Norte?
The extension is linked to the urban development of Madrid Nuevo Norte. Information published by the Community of Madrid indicates that the new configuration will not enter into service until the corresponding development has been carried out.
